What is the "Paws For Charity Art Book Project"?

2012 is the fourth annual Art Book curated by me, and the third edition of the Paws For Charity Project. The book will include images of dogs and cats (the "paws" part of the project) contributed by artists and photographers. Artists donate jpeg versions of their images (either artwork or artistic photographs) for use in the project. Copyright of the images remain with the artist. Amateur artists/photographers are welcome to participate!

All proceeds from this year's project will be donated to S.H.A.I.D. Tree Animal Shelter in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia (the "for charity" part of the project).

How will my images be used?

Using contributed jpeg images from artists, the following products are produced and sold with all proceeds being donated to charity. Copyright of the images remain with the artist.

1. Coffee Table Book - published through blurb.com

The book will be 10 inches wide by 8 inches high, and will be published through Blurb.com . Each page will feature the artwork or photographs from one artist. The page will also include a small photo of the artist, a brief bio of the artist, and a brief statement from the artist. My goal is to include a minimum of 65 - 70 artists.

2. Wall Calendar for the calendar year 2013 - published through lulu.com in October

3. Greeting cards - from participating artists (see below)

Tell me more about the greeting cards?

1. Artists will have the option of having one or more of their images printed on blank greeting cards - this is totally optional and not required to participate in the project.

($40 per image for the printing of 25 professionally printed high quality greeting cards, sized 5 by 8 inches. 18 cards and envelopes will be mailed to the artist, 7 cards retained by Paws For Charity and sold through pawsforcharity.etsy.com with all proceeds donated to the designated charity).

2. Artists will have the option of having one or more of their images printed on postcards - this is totally optional and not required to participate in the project.

($20 per image for the printing of 100 professionally printed postcards, sized approx 4 by 6 inches. 75 postcards will be mailed to the artist, 25 postcards retained by Paws For Charity and sold through pawsforcharity.etsy.com with all proceeds donated to the designated charity).

If I am interested in participating, or have some questions, what do I do?

1. Contact Sara: saraharley(at)eastlink(dot)ca

2. Include:

- your full name (as you want it printed in the book),

- your website or blog address,

- the titles of your images,

- a photo of you,

- a brief bio (3rd person, 3 or 4 sentences),

- and an artist's statement (2 or 3 sentences about your artwork, or why you want to be involved in the project, or anything else you'd like to say to the readers)

3. Email up to 5 images (artwork or artistic photographs of dogs or cats...no snapshots of family pets please!) by February 29, 2012. You will be sent a release form when I receive your images. (or I can send it to you before you send your images...just ask)

4. If you have a "paws" image that you think might be good for our front & back book covers, send that along too (will not be included as part of your five submissions)

5. Your images cannot be considered for the project unless a release form is received. Copyright of your images remains with you.

In November 2010, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. If you have followed Paws For Charity, you know that we have been donating to breast cancer charity for the past 5 years. Because of my cancer diagnosis in November, I decided to take the project in a new and exciting direction.

Introducing The "Love From Me" Project!

2011 is the first year for The Love From Me Project. It was inspired by the 2009 and 2010 Paws For Charity Art Book Project, which was also created by me. Paws For Charity raised $5,500 for breast cancer charity.

The purpose of the Love From Me Art Book is to provide inspiration to people going through a period of personal challenge, and to raise funds for cancer charity. The book will be divided into several inspirational themes:
1. Courage, Determination, Strength
2. Family, Friendship
3. Love, Laughter
4. Peace, Serenity
5. Nature
6. Faith

This year's project will include:
1. A coffee table art book
2. Poster and postcards
3. Wall calendar
4. Greeting cards (participation optional)

The Love From Me Art Book will contain artwork and photography that has been donated by artists around the world...all designed to inspire and lift the spirits of the reader. Although targeted to cancer patients, the book will be an inspiration to anyone facing life challenges.

All proceeds from the project will be donated to the Rose Fund c/o the Health Services Foundation in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. This is a registered charity created to help cancer patients deal with financial difficulties. You can read the story behind the Rose Fund here.

The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2011. All artwork and photographs will be considered, as long as they fall under the project's themes. (the Paws For Charity Project included only dog and cat images)

The 2011 Paws For Charity Art Book Project has applied for a Pepsi Refresh Grant. The first stage is complete, and our project has been approved for the voting phase.

Unfortunately, this is a popularity contest and the next stage is a two month voting period. I am asking for your help to vote our idea to the number one spot. I have applied for a $10,000 grant to help fund the printing of books, posters, cards, calendars, and promotional materials for our 2011 Art Book Project.

Sara Harley started Paws For Charity in 2006, while owner of a dog biscuit company. With the help of many people along the way, she has raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer charity. I have received my test copy of the 2011 Paws For Charity calendar and it is fantastic! Packed with 72 images of dogs and cats supplied by photographers and artists around the world, and all proceeds from calendar sales go directly to The Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade, a registered charity with programs in over 50 countries. This charity also carries the Humane Charity Seal of Approval.

January:Following the recommendations of a couple of our participants, I created the calendars on Lulu.com. The quality of the printing and the paper is top notch....very heavy duty paper (100 #) with a glossy type finish. The quality is so much better than the company I have used in the past to create my own calendars that I'm switching to Lulu for my photo calendars this year.

June:
I also chose Lulu.com to produce the calendars because they print calendars "on demand". This means that the calendars get printed as they are ordered, and we don't have any worries about unsold (and unpaid for!) calendars. Lulu looks after the printing and the shipping....and they will be sending all the proceeds directly to the charity (Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade).

Information from Lynn's etsy shop:We are very happy to announce that we have received permission to be an official part of the clean up effort in the gulf through the Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program (LMMSTRP). Audubon Nature Institute is the coordinator of LMMSTRP. Audubon holds the Louisiana state permit to rescue, rehabilitate and release marine mammals and sea turtles. Because the animals cannot be released back into their native habitat, they must be housed until the Gulf is safe for release. Kate Green began painting dogs after finding a dog starving to death on a country road. So saddened that anyone could allow this to happen to such a beautiful animal, a painting seemed a suitable way to honour Pepper - now one of Kate's own very loved dogs. Writer and photographer Melissa McDaniel travels the country photographing dogs for the photo book projects. Jennifer Gonzales is a Michigander turned Texan and is loving it. She became enchanted with photography at the tender age of six. Someone gave her a dollar store pixie camera with a flash stick. Santa had also brought her dog that year, and she used up all the film (and the flash stick) immediately by taking pictures of him. All the photos came back with a red cast to them and most came back totally black. But one turned out (still tinted red) where Jennifer had done a portrait of her dog and she had caught the fleeting expression on his face that she loved best. She still cherishes that photo.

Miriam Mas moved to Canada in 1988. With professional artists in both sides of her family for several generations, she always had an interest in the visual arts. However, it was not until she was an adult, and living in Canada, that she started to pursue her love for photography, oil painting and pencil drawing. Today, she is often tied up with training service dogs for people with disabilities. Recently a grandma, Miriam may have limited time to dedicate to her artwork, but nevertheless, she cannot deny the urge she feels from time to time to continue to paint, draw and take more photographs.

Miriam was the founder of Canines With A Cause, which has recently become the new Assistance Dogs Division of Canadian Guide Dogs For The Blind.

A little more than two years ago, Bill Storoniak decided that he waned to take "Taking pictures" more seriously than just vacation snapshots. During this past year, he has developed into a photographer. Since he has had no formal training as a photographer, he learns by trial and error and makes his own rules and more time than not, mistakes. Cameron Graves was born in Greenwich, CT in 1968. Cameron’s education includes a BA in Art History from Princeton University, Art Education from McGill University and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 1996 Cameron received the Robert Pope Foundation scholarship for painting and was short-listed for the Prince Edward Award, and in 1997 she received the NSCAD Endowment Fund Scholarship. Cameron has shown her work in numerous exhibitions, both group and solo, locally, as well as in Greenwich, CT, Princeton, NJ, Montreal, PQ, and Guelph, ON. Since graduating from NSCAD Cameron has continued to show extensively in Halifax. In 2000, she performed a painting on stage with musical artist Veda Hille, and in both 2003, 2005,and 2007 she volunteered 80 hours of work to paint specialty murals in the Kid’s Help Phone Designer Showcase House. In addition, in both 2005 and 2006 Cameron created the set design for Simply the Breast, a Canadian Breast Cancer fundraiser. Over the past few years Cameron has been painting pet commissions, resulting in a very positive response from the pet community. The goal is to make great works that consider not only the animal’s physical appearance, but also his/her nature. Capturing the spirit and personality of the pet is the key to a successful work.

Sabrina Helas is a Los Angeles based photographer who has lived and worked in San Francisco and New York City. She specializes in documentary style photography of children and pets. Her love for photography began in the 8th grade where she spent most of her summer in her school's dark room. After working in the film and television industry for over eight years, she finally decided to follow her true passion of photography and hasn't looked back since. Sabrina began Cookies and Water Photography in 2005 and in 2008 she launched Milk and Cookies Photography. Sabrina currently resides in Eagle Rock, California with her husband and two crazy pups.

Diane is an award winning short story writer who has increasingly added photography to her creative endeavours. As a freelance photographer she incorporates editorial, environmental, and portrait work. Her favourite subjects are dogs and horses and the people who love them. The photography journey for Becky Boggs began with her recovery from breast cancer surgery in 2001. She quickly became on a mission to find a way to capture the healing beauty and comfort that nature provides and take it to breast cancer patients. She created a book, to be given to newly diagnosed patients. She also provides nature's healing in a variety of medical settings to give solace and peace.

I think it's wonderful that Becky uses her photography to help heal and comfort others.
Her photograph "May I Come Too?" features Jack and is on page 21 of the 2010 Paws For Charity Art Book.

Becky is also the photographer of the photo "We Share Pink Ribbons" on page 20. The story of Carol and Belle will be posted soon!

Melissa Langer lives in Louisville, Colorado with her husband, Fred, her parrotlet, Gilbert and her pug, Emmitt. She loves to paint pugs and other dog breeds she lovingly calls Pug Pals. Capturing the spirit of each dog for people to deeply connect to and enjoy is the true focus of her efforts. Her paintings embody the toothy grins and wagging tails that happily greet us throughout our lives. Melissa's passion is working with acrylics on wood. She loves how the paint glides across the wood, often revealing a subtle natural grain of the surface below. Melissa's joy in life is to share her art with others.

Sue is one of the founders of Paws For Charity, and throughout the years has generously contributed her photography and designing skills to our various projects. When I was the owner of a dog biscuit company, I sold a product called "Crunch for a Cure", with all proceeds donated to breast cancer charity. Sue photographed breast cancer survivors, and designed the packaging for these biscuits. Her work is always outstanding, and I have missed collaborating with her since I moved to a different province.

Sue started with a photojournalism diploma from Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. Throughout a short career as a staff photographer for several major dailies, Sue won numerous awards. In 2002, she decided to build her own business revolving around capturing the bond that exists between people and their pets in an artistic and editorialized way. She currently runs her own Animal Lifestyle Photography company from her country studio in Carp, Ontario. She has worked for clients across Canada and US and is regulary featured in Dogs in Canada, including the cover photo for their 2010 annual issue.

Sue contributed two feature pages of breast cancer survivors (page 3 and page 40). Her submission to our book, entitled "Katie" (page 16), features a little girl with autism loving her working dog. Her dog has opened up her world.This photo was featured in an article published in the December 2009 issue of Dogs in Canada. You can read about it here on Sue's blog.

Many "paws" photos were sent in, and it was a difficult choice to pick just one for the front cover. But I love Stephanie's photo (I love the water, love the beach, and love dogs!) Because the dog isn't shown...just the shadow...the photo represents "all dogs" to me. Also...I like the subtle link that this cover makes to last year's cover shot.

Here's a bit about our talented cover photographer...

Stephanie loves animals. In fact, the first time she picked up a camera was to take a picture of her dog Neka. It's what inspired here to take photography in college, and after finishing college, she found herself shooting throusands of pictures of her own pets. Stephanie was destined to pursue animal photography ever since Neka smiled and Stephanie pressed the shutter button.

This amazing photo is the back cover of the 2010 Paws For Charity Art Book. I love this photo!

I considered many different options for our back cover, but this seemed to be the perfect shot.

This image was contributed by the very talented Melissa McDaniel. Writer and photographer Melissa McDaniel travels the country photographing dogs for the photo book projects. An avid supporter of animal rescue, Melissa donates time and money to rescues, volunteering to photograph their dogs and donating 30% of the proceeds from her photo books to rescues around the country. After adopting her deaf border collie mix, Sadie, and learning that thousands of deaf dogs are put dog each year simply because they are deaf, Melissa became involved in deaf dog advocacy and rescue. Clover, the bull terrier in her Paws for Charity entry, appears in her photo book Deaf Dogs. Melissa currently lives in Philadelphia with her dogs Sadie and Bella (a Brittany) and her two cats, Fuji and Bjork.

Melissa's photography is stunning....I encourage you to take a look at her fantastic photo books, and help raise funds for some very important rescue organizations.

The 2010 Paws For Charity Art Book has been completed, and will be uploaded to the publisher on Friday March 12th. All of this year's participants are listed down the left hand side of our blog. Please pay them a visit and say "thanks" for participating in our little project!

I had over 300 submissions this year (up from 99 last year)...wow! This year's book features images of dogs and cats from 65 artists and photographers (professionals and amateurs), features 4 breast cancer survivors, and is 75 pages long. Along with some beautiful images, it contains photos of the artists, information about them, and a statement in their own words.

All proceeds from the sale of the 2010 Paws For Charity Art Book Project will be donated to the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade. The two primary reasons for this choice:
1. The Avon Foundation supports breast cancer programs worldwide...in 50 countries.
2. This charity has the "Humane Charity" seal of approval.

The mission of the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade is to raise funds and awareness for advancing access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer, with a focus on the medically underserved. From its launch in 1992 through 2007, the multi-faceted initiatives of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade have raised and awarded more than $525 million to the breast cancer cause worldwide. Funding is awarded to five areas: breast cancer education and awareness, screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support services and scientific research. Avon now supports programs for breast cancer in some 50 countries around the world.
