Art Book Project: Charity Selected

All proceeds from the sale of the 2009 Paws For Charity Art Book Project will be donated to the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade. The two primary reasons for this choice:
1. The Avon Foundation supports breast cancer programs worldwide...in 50 countries.
2. This charity has the "Humane Charity" seal of approval.

The mission of the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade is to raise funds and awareness for advancing access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer, with a focus on the medically underserved. From its launch in 1992 through 2007, the multi-faceted initiatives of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade have raised and awarded more than $525 million to the breast cancer cause worldwide. Funding is awarded to five areas: breast cancer education and awareness, screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support services and scientific research. Avon now supports programs for breast cancer in some 50 countries around the world.
Knowing that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women, the goal of the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade is to benefit all women. However, there is special emphasis on reaching medically underserved women, including low-income, elderly and minority women, and women without adequate health insurance. Reversing historical disparities in breast cancer care is a priority of the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade.
You can read more information about the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade here.

Paws for Charity Photo Collection

I am involved with two large Paws for Charity projects this year. The first (as you know) is the Art Book Project, which is well underway. The book will be uploaded to the online publisher tomorrow and should be available sometime in April. All funds raised will go to breast cancer charities.

My second big project will benefit a small registered charity in Ottawa, Canada called Canines with a Cause (BN # 85755 0735 RR0001). CWAC trains assistance dogs for people with mobility disabilities. Their 2007 budget was only $20,000! It's such a great cause, and they really need our help. So, I'll be collecting your animal photos to produce a "2009 Friends of CWAC Yearbook" and 2010 desk top calendar. Here are the details:

All photos will be printed in the 2009 Friends of CWAC yearbook, a professionally published book. In addition, 12-25 photos will be selected to produce a 2010 desk top calendar. All funds raised are donated to CWAC.

Important Dates:

September 30th - photos must be received by this date
October 15th - calendars will be available for purchase
October 30th - yearbooks will be available for purchase

Available Photo Sizes:
Regular Photo Insert: $5 Three Regular Inserts: $12
Half Page Insert: $30 Full Page Insert: $50
Preorder your desk top calendar: $12 each (includes postage)

Your Photos: Minimum resolution is 230 dpi. Please size your photos to 4 x 6 maximum size (unless you're purchasing a full page insert)

How to Submit Your Photos:
1. Name your photo: YourFullName-PetName
2. Email your photo to: saraharley(at)sympatico(dot)ca
Include your full name and mailing address (this information will remain confidential, and will not be shared)

Payment Instructions: When your photo is received, you will be sent instructions by email to pay your entry fee. Payment is due within 24 hours of receiving payment instructions, or your photo will not be included in the yearbook, and will not be considered for the calendar. Once I receive notice from Paypal, I will acknowledge receipt of your payment. All funds are donated to CWAC.

Photos selected for calendars: will be contacted by email in early October.

Photos will be printed in the Yearbook: in the order they are received. (the earlier you send your photos, the closer to the front of the book they'll be!)

Calendars and Yearbooks: will be available for purchase in mid October.

How can you help? Please help get the word out! Feel free to use the photo above and blog about this project.

2010 Art Book Project

Note: photos for the 2010 Art Book Project are currently being collected in a Flickr group:
www.flickr.com/groups/PawsForCharity/ Or, read and follow the instructions below.

What is this project?
An art book compilation of photographs and paintings from 37 artists, featuring dogs and/or cats to raise money for breast cancer charity. (ie, dog, cat, dog and cat, dog with person, cat with person....etc)

Who will participate?
I am looking for up to 37 artists or photographers who are willing to contribute one jpeg file of a piece of art or photograph featuring a dog and/or cat. (copyright of the image remains with the artist)

What kind of images are we looking for?
All images will be considered. But this is a book celebrating our connection with our pets and raising funds for breast cancer, so here are some examples:
1. Images showing the bond between people and their pets.
2. "Pink", the color representing breast cancer awareness.
3. Original artwork or artistic photographs (ie, not "snapshots")

What are the details?
Books will be produced through an online on demand publishing company (Blurb.com).
Online price will be set at $5 above publishing cost.
Profits will be donated to a breast cancer charity. (to be determined January 2010)
Each page of the book will have one image and will include the name and contact information of the photographer/artist.
Copyrights of the images will remain with the contributors.

What do dogs and cats have to do with breast cancer?
Paws for Charity was created to combine two passions - my love of animals and my desire to raise funds for charity. If you are like me, your pets mean the world to you. Their unconditional love, their love of life, their joy in simple things...they make our world better. The Paws for Charity Art Book celebrates the bond between us and our pets.
Breast Cancer Charity is a personal cause for me. I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was 21. All of the funds raised through sales of this book will benefit breast cancer charity.

What is the commitment required of participants?
1. submit a jpeg image (resolution 300 or higher) of your art/photo to email address
with Paws For Charity as your subject line. Include a brief description of why you'd like to be involved in this project, and a brief description of your image. (the story behind your image)
Participants will be selected at the beginning of March 2010.
If your image is selected I'll need:
2. A brief bio with your image detailing: - your name - the website or blog address you would like published in the book - a photo of yourself
3. contributors encouraged to include a Paws For Charity logo on their blog and/or website with a link to the Paws For Charity blog (this will be provided to you)
4. contributors encouraged to post an article on their blog about their participation in the project

What benefits will participants receive?
- all participants will be listed on the Paws for Charity blog for a one year period, with links to their websites or blogs
- a separate blog post featuring each participant will be posted on the blog: Paws for Charity
- articles about the project and participants will be sent to online ezines and hard copy magazines
- any known articles published will be communicated to all participants

Know someone?
If you know someone who may be interested in participating, please let them know about this project...the more, the merrier!

Timelines: Submissions for the 2010 book will be required by January 31, 2010.

Final Selections: Final selection of participants will be made the first week of February 2010.
Contributors will be selected to ensure a well balanced art book of photos & artwork.
Successful submissions will be contacted by the second week of February 2010.

If you are interested in participating please leave a comment with your email address. I'll email you with the details in early January 2010.

2009 Art Book update

This is one of our dogs....Cassie, an adopted Giant Schnauzer/Standard Poodle mix...at Risser's Beach in Nova Scotia. This photo is not part of the Paws for Charity Art Book, but I wanted to include a photo with this post.

The cut off for submissions was February 28th. Wow! What a fantastic success for the first year of doing this. I received 93 submissions for the 2009 Art Book project.

Unfortunately, only 37 photos/art pieces will be included in the book so this means that I will have to disappoint many, many people. I have been losing sleep over this! I'm hoping to contact everyone by the end of next week.

I want to thank everyone for their submissions...they are all great! This is going to be a wonderful book! Stay tuned for more details.
